Rise of the Elves

Lathril, Blade of the Elves

Lathril, Blade of the Elves | Art by: Caroline Gariba

The Elves chosen to seed Pol, were those closest to Magic.  They soon became the pre-eminent magic users on Pol.  So much so that the Elvish Language was one the same with the Language of magic and all spells and learning were perfected in that tongue.

The High Elves discovered near Elderborne, an ancient artefact, that predated the Gods actions.  This artefact helped them understand how to better harness and concentrate magic.  It was thought with this ability to concentrate and store the magical ether, spells of higher power then they knew may be possible. [1]

Soon eleven (11) great spires were being constructed across Pol.  These spires were to harness and concentrate magical essence and direct it to the high council of magic in Elderborne.

What happened next is only conjecture, but it is thought that this system, when finally activated, proofed more effective that was expected.

The Great energies that were formed and directed to Elderborne and the Elvish enclaves was too great, they were ill prepared. Elderborne was laid waste, the Elvish homeland and their enclaves disappeared, all the spires consumed, and the great curses enacted around each.  Around Elderborne the sea froze in place and the land turned to disarray.

The elves of this land had always kept themselves aloof and isolated from most general settlements. They had little to do with humans and kept their own council. However, their Mages and Scholars were well thought of as they would travel to places of learning to pass on their teachings.

The major elven centres were restricted locations, and the elves would exclude any not specifically invited. At the time of the great catastrophe all elven settlement disappeared, and nothing has been seen of their civilization since. Even great cities just vanished leaving no trace.

There are those who claim elven ancestors, but no true elves have been seen for centuries.[2]

Since that time, Elves have been unknown in the lands, but Elvish remains the language of the scholars and magic.

[1] Possibly this artefact was something from the original Nethereese captured in the magical passage.

[2] A small number of elves are now known to exist throughout Pol, mostly those who were set upon specific tasks.  These are now old and generally keep their own council.
